Recording a capture

Open app.vangrid.io, choose Capture Data, and allow camera access. Allow location if you want the capture to appear on the map. The capture app runs in any browser. On Android it is also on Google Play, and it is the same app either way. Record while walking slowly around the subject. Keep the phone steady, cover every side you can reach, and do not pan quickly. A capture that misses a side produces a 3D model with a hole in it. When you stop recording, the clip uploads and goes through an automatic quality check. Clips that are too short or unreadable are rejected, and you are told why. A clip that passes is ready to submit to a bounty at data.vangrid.io.

What happens to faces and number plates

Faces and vehicle number plates are detected and blurred on your phone, while you record.
The blur is applied before the video is encoded. The unblurred frames never leave your device. Only the blurred video is uploaded.

Location

If you allow location, your capture is geotagged and appears on the map. Captures without location still work. They do not appear on the map, and some bounties require location to verify that you captured the right place.

Where uploads are unavailable

Uploads are not available in every region. If yours is restricted you will see “Uploads are not available in your region.” This is based on the location of the capture and on your network region.

If you appear in a capture

Anyone who appears in a capture can request removal or additional blurring. Write to privacy@vangrid.io. The Privacy Policy sets out the process and the timescales.
